MEMOFY

Smart Flashcards

Project Overview

Using flashcards as a learning method especially to learn a new language remains a popular approach among students. Despite transitioning from traditional paper-based methods to digital platforms quite some time ago, we still lack a user-friendly and efficient application. They are often expensive, and not easy to work with because of bad UI/UX.

Memofy is a free application without disturbing ads, very easy to use with different features including AI assistance.

A team of designers and developers is behind the creation of Memofy. In my role, I undertook responsibilities such as user research, ideation, and wireframing, and also contributed to the UI design and the establishment of a comprehensive design system.

Problems

  • Disturbing ads

  • Not easy to share

  • Difficult to keep the routine

  • Expensive memberships

Goals

  • Define the target audience

  • Ad free platform

  • Free application for everyone

  • Implement updated technology

My Role

  • Research and define the problem

  • Ideate

  • Sketch and wireframing

  • UI and Hi-Fidelity prototyping

  • Usability tests

Project Duration

Target Audience

In this project, our target audience is anyone who wants to learn something new, specifically new language learners and teachers.

Research

I conducted an online survey with more than 40 participants to find out their needs and their struggles using similar applications or methods. All participants were adult learners mostly in the range of 25 to 45. 20% were either teachers or students.

Research Findings

  • 80% use this method to learn a new language

  • This method is popular among adult learners

  • Only 40% are satisfied with similar applications in the market

  • It is hard to maintain motivation and build a routine

  • Most of the applications are not user-friendly

Observation

To compete in this market, a learning app must offer unique and valuable features, such as improved retention methods, innovative interactive elements, or provide a more fun and engaging environment. The app must also have a strong user experience and be marketed effectively to stand out from the competition.

  • I need to learn a new language

  • I have to memorize 100 new words per day

  • It is important to customize my learning process

  • Flash cards are the most effective method for me

  • Install five different applications

  • Try to keep a schedule

  • Buy subscription for more advanced features

  • Try to track learning speed

  • How much time I can devote to this subject daily?

  • What is the best way to learn faster?

  • How can I track my process?

  • Does the subscription fee I paid worse it?

  • What is the optimal way to share and learn?

  • Confused about finding the right app

  • Afraid of wasting time and money

  • Anxious of not be able to keep the study plan and track the process

  • Frustrated of using so many different methods and applications

User Persona

User Journey Map

I developed a user journey map that illustrates the user's journey from the initial launch of the application to exploring its features and performing various functions.

Challenge

Based on the user research I found out these are the main pain points for users:

  • Finding and generating the content they need

  • Keeping track of their process

  • Wasting money on different useless apps

  • Not be able to share their learning materials

  • Lack of efficient methods of learning

Solution

  • AI assist

  • Daily goal setting

  • Free application

  • Easy to share with friends and groups

  • Advanced learning methods

Paper wireframes

After analyzing research data and defining the problem, I started to draw some wireframes.

The user has three main needs:

  • Find the content they need

  • Be able to keep track of their process

  • Be able to share study content with others

With a focus on these needs and the user's pain points in mind, I sketched some paper wireframes.

Hi-fidelity Prototype

On the home screen, you can find your tasks, you can browse suggested bindles and you can create your own bundle manually or with an AI assist generator.

Impacts and Reflections

This product was launched in July 2023 and had over 100 downloads in only one week. We had very positive feedback from users.

Working with a great team of developers and designers was a valuable experience, however, it had some challenging points as well.

This application is capable of expanding and having more features. One of our main target users are teachers, we will add more features for this group in the next phase.
